Improving the wellbeing of communities in Zanzibar starting at the beginning of life
The WAJAMAMA Movement
We are a women-led grassroots organization revolutionizing the narratives surrounding reproductive, maternal, and child health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa.
We represent innovation, local expertise, and evidence-based practices to drive strategic changes in healthcare systems.
OUR WHY
10x
Babies in sub-Saharan Africa are 10x more likely to die in their first month of life compared to those in higher-income countries.
50x
Women in sub-Saharan Africa have a 50x higher chance of dying during birth than their counterparts in high-income countries.
COUNTLESS
Of those who survive pregnancy and birth, countless suffer from irreparable trauma and complications for the rest of their lives.
Underlying these distressing statistics are sub-quality healthcare delivery systems, which contain under-trained and under-resourced clinicians and facilities, that continue to plague women and their families.
WE EXIST TO TACKLE THESE DISPARITIES HEAD-ON
Our mission is to make integrated healthcare services accessible to women and children in economically-marginalized communities during the first 1000 days in order to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Our solutions are designed to sustainably and responsibly break the cycle of trauma, poverty, and disempowerment; and we are starting in Zanzibar.
Our initiatives are equipping healthcare providers with knowledge and skills to provide safe, respectful, and evidence-based care for all.
BUT, WE CAN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU
With over 30 Community Clinical Facilitators trained, more than 600 women benefitting from our life-saving Group Care Model, 4,000 women and girls accessing our Well-Woman and Well-Girl programs, and 487 teachers trained on Menstrual Health and Hygiene, none of this would have been possible without your support.
