Improving the wellbeing of communities in Zanzibar starting at the beginning of life
Welcome to WAJAMAMA.
We are a women-led Zanzibari NGO transforming the narratives surrounding reproductive health, pregnancy and childbirth outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa.
An innovative non-profit organization driving strategic healthcare initiatives.
THE PROBLEM, IN NUMBERS
10x
Babies in sub-Saharan Africa are 10x more likely to die in their first month of life compared to those in higher-income countries.
68%
In 2020, sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 68% of maternal deaths, the highest maternal mortality ratio in the world.
COUNTLESS
Countless mamas and babies who do survive childbirth spend the rest of their lives suffering from irreparable trauma and disempowerment as a result of lack of safe, dignified, and respectful care.
These distressing statistics are a result of inadequate healthcare delivery systems, which employ clinicians lacking proper training and resources to adequately address the pressing issues of women’s, girls’, maternal, and child health. And Zanzibar is no different.
THAT’S WHERE WE COME IN
Our mission is to improve health outcomes for women and children by making integrated healthcare services accessible in economically-marginalized communities.
Our initiatives are designed to break the cycle of trauma, poverty and disempowerment that is all too present in sub-Saharan Africa. We start at the beginning of life. And we are starting in Zanzibar.
We are improving the holistic health of communities by equipping health care providers with knowledge and tools to provide dignified, respectful, and evidence-based care for all.
IT STARTS WITH US
– AND YOU.
With over 20 Community Clinical Facilitators trained, 400 women enrolled in our RMNCH Group Care program, and 4,000 women and girls accessing our reproductive health campaign, none of this would have been possible without people like you.
